There are many negative comments and sad stories you may encounter coming from AdSense Publishers not making enough money from this advertising program. Some say they make at least 5.00/month from their blog, which of course is not enough, while others are not even reaching earnings of 1.00/month. Although many are having a bad experience from AdSense, on the other hand there are also those who are happily making decent income from this program. I am not yet an AdSense Guru, but right now after accepting the teachings of the great ones and after following their advices, at least my earnings from AdSense started to improve. And in this post I would like to share briefly on how to make money with Google.
I myself started on the wrong foot when I first ventured to earn from AdSense. I earned a total of only 3.00 for one whole year in 2008. I put up a blog, grabbed my own domain name, paid my own hosting account, then I posted many useful articles in my site and waited for the money to come rolling in. But the clicks never came, there weren’t even visitors coming to my site so I tried advertising and blog networks like Adgitize and Entrecard but things didn’t improved. For one whole year, I only earned a meager three dollars.
So I tried other monetization methods and I focused on affiliate marketing. To my surprise life became harder for me because you have to sell first before you could earn. From then on instead of wasting my energies trying to earn, I searched the Internet trying to discover what really is the secret of these AdSense and Blogging Gurus who are earning lots of money online. And soon I discovered one by one which actually were not secrets but facts and truths which turns out only a few have done and have benn doing it.
Work Hard and Work Smart
Before you start venturing in any business online without selling your own product at the start you must be prepared for the hard work that it requires. Getting rich or earning decently online cannot be done overnight or it cannot be attained easily just by leaving everything on autopilot. Although as you gain experience and as your site grows, things will be a lot easier in the long run. But if you are new and starting everything from scratch, you have to instill in your mind that there is a lot of work to be done.
But what if you have already been blogging yet you are not earning your expected income? You may have been working hard yet things are not showing up as you expected. Then I guess something is wrong with what you are doing. I’ve experienced the same thing, I’ve maintained websites before but never earned anything more than a few cents every month. Only when I learned how to do it right that my earnings improved dramatically.
Working hard is just a part of it, being creative, working smart and doing things right is needed to succeed. You may be good at writing, you could post 2-3 times a week but that will not guarantee you will be the next AdSense Guru earning six digit income a year. Provide Quality Content
The first thing you have to do before you start accepting visitors is to prepare your website first. You have to provide useful, unique and quality content. Google is very strict about this and if ever it finds out that your site was just built for AdSense, your account may be penalized or worse banned. It ain’t bad writing for search engines as long as you maintain the quality of your articles for your human readers.
So before slapping those AdSense Ads in your web pages, make sure you have enough posts in your site to be legitimate enough in the eyes of Google. 10 posts are good enough but you have to update it regularly. For me, in my niche sites, if I have something important to impart, I usually write it and publish it immediately, if not I usually update them every month. Targeted Traffic and Keywords
What I discovered is that the secret in earning money online whether AdSense or any other kind of monetization is to acquire targeted traffic. Not just any traffic but traffic (1) brought directly by other sites,(2) brought by search results, (3) advertisements or (4) anything that will get through your site because of the natural interest of the reader and not done artificially like traffic exchange programs. And all this can be attained by link building.
If you are using traffic exchanges, stop doing it now. If you are afraid that you would loss traffic, readers, and comments, then ask yourself, why are you maintaining a website or a blog anyway? To earn from AdSense, right!? And if you can’t let go of these networks giving you artificial traffic, then you are wasting your energies visiting other websites so that others may visit you. You will not earn much if you keep on doing this because the majority of the site owners are not interested in your site as well as you do theirs. Focus your energies on acquiring organic traffic, you must build links. Start writing and submit them to article directories. But before doing so, be prepared for your targeted keywords that you are going to use in your anchor links. Think what words are people using when they will search for the information provided by your website, use them. By submitting articles to article directories, not only do you provide direct traffic to your site (reader clicks your link because of interest) you also provide a baclink that will be used by search engines in ranking your site. There are many places to acquire one way backlinks like squidoo.com, Hubpages, Infobarrel, etc. You could also guest post, now guest posting on authority sites like problogger.net or dailyblogtips.com will assure you of getting direct traffic. Your link will also be counted more coming from these high traffic sites. Just make sure you use your anchor links properly, remember no one is searching for the keywords, “follow this link.”
AdSense Optimization
It will take weeks or months before your site starts to be displayed on top of search results especially if you have done your link building properly and if you have done your niche research very carefully. So let’s say your site now is generating the traffic you expected. People are visiting your site, you check your Google Analytics and you are happy because people are visiting your site due to their interest in your website or blog. But then you realize, no one is clicking your AdSense ads.
There are two main reasons for this, first your site is not optimized for AdSense, secondly you have chosen a niche where your visitors don’t want to click on AdSense ads (this is true especially if your visitors are AdSense Publishers), they would rather copy the URL and paste it in their browser if they are interested in them rather than clicking them. So we will discuss the first part and the second one will be discussed later on.
Another important thing that should be pointed out, in order to maximize your earnings from AdSense, is that you should remove all distractions in your site as much as possible. You should make your readers aware of your AdSense ads all the time. So when they finish reading the article that they searched for, the next thing they would do is to click your ads. Placing a lot of affiliate links and various advertisements will lessen the chances that your readers click any AdSense ads placed in your site.
Optimization is another important thing when you want to maximize your earnings from AdSense. If you are using small banners, squares or rectangles, I guess it’s time you might consider using the bigger ones. Your ad placement is also crucial. If you are placing your ads far away from your post, your visitor will definitely won’t search for your ads and as soon as he gets the information that he needs, he goes away. The blending of your ads are also important, how they are placed, the colors of the links, description or URL are also crucial. Put Up Several Niche Websites
So far so good I think the most important things have been covered, by this time you should be earning now from your websites or blogs. Let’s say your site that you have developed is now having an income averaging 10.00 / month. You might say, that’s pretty small, now here another eye opener, most AdSense Gurus out there have more than one website or blog and it’s the truth. If you have 20 websites having an average income of 10.00 / month, then that is 200.00 / a month for all your 20 websites. And it doesn’t stay there, as you keep on building links your site will soon acquire related keywords you didn’t even used in your anchor links. And as your site acquire more readers, of course your AdSense ads will generate more clicks.
This is something you must accept, you can’t get rich if you are going to maintain only one site, unless of course you could put up another Google.com or Amazon.com which would need lots of financial resources. As you gain experience, you will soon discover untapped potential niches that are profitable. At the start, you should use whatever income that is being generated to build links, putting up new niche sites and outsourcing other related activities needed for producing content and site promotion.
Experiment on the Best Monetization Method
There are sites that works best and if you use AdSense on them but there are also sites that will not earn much from them. It’s true, AdSense is simple and profitable. You don’t need to build any mailing list to promote products but let us accept that not all sites are good in generating income from AdSense. You will soon realize that some websites will work better if affiliate marketing is used for them. So the only way to know this is to try some experiments.
Experiments conducted must be made carefully. Don’t make any changes so abruptly that you may not discover the result that you were looking for. Darren Rowse of Problogger.net pointed out that AdSense works fine in some of his websites while it does not on others, although his second highest earning method is AdSense as disclosed in his July 2010 earnings Report. Another thing is the characteristics of your readers, let’s say your targeted readers are experienced AdSense Publishers, certainly you won’t earn much click from them, you would rather dwell in affiliate marketing or better still sell your own product to earn.
Success and Failure
Take note that not all niche sites that you will put up will be successful. This will depend on your competition and your targeted traffic. If you are prepared to compete with well established websites then do so. But be prepared for a very long boring months or even years before you reach the top page of search results. And if you think AdSense is not working then you can divert to other types of monetization methods. Just make sure things are going to be profitable, it’s no use again if you will focus your energies but won’t reap the rewards in making money online.
Rinse and Repeat
So after putting up a successful niche, again find another profitable niche and establish them. Follow again the basic methods outlined here and as I said and as your experience in the Web improves things will get a lot easier. Another thing where you can earn huge profits if you are already maintaining several successful niche sites in the future is to sell them; this is another business venture called flipping websites.
